Small grains breeding group

The small grain breeding program includes the breeding of wheat, barley and triticale. Wheat breeding includes breeding of common (bread) wheat, soft white wheat intended for confectionary industry and hard (durum) wheat for pasta production.

The main goal of barley breeding is to develop varieties of malting and fodder barley, while a special segment includes breeding of hulless barley intended for human consumption. Triticale breeding is focused primarly on the development of varieties intended for the production of high quality grain materials for the feed production. For the all types of small grains the aim is to develop varieties of high and stable yield, good technological quality and better resistance to biotic (diseases and pests) and abiotic stresses (drought, low and high temperatures).

So far, a total of 19 different small grains varieties have been registered to the institute, both in the country and abroad.
