Maize breeding group

Maize breeding activities at the "Zemun Polje" Institute is organized within several maize breeding groups led by experienced researchers and their closest collaborators. Activities in these groups are directed towards the development and improvement of the new inbred lines breeding programs and the creation of maize hybrids with superior agronomic traits belonging to different maturity groups (FAO 100 -700) and purposes.

Each maize breeding program begins with the selection of the initial genetic material and the creation of parental populations from which future inbred lines are selected based on their agronomic characteristics, yielding potential and adaptation to specific agro-climatic conditions.

ZP maize hybrids

Experimental inbred lines and hybrids are tested in trials at different locations to identify these hybrid combinations with the greatest potential for further commercialization. Each phase and aspect of breeding is thoroughly planned and implemented with the application of modern scientific and statistical methods. To increase the efficiency, speed and precision in maize breeding programs at the "Zemun Polje" Institute, modern molecular and biotechnical technologies are implemented (molecular characterization of genetic material, double haploids…) as well as the use of winter generation.

This way of work on maize breeding, enables the Maize research Institute Zemun Polje” to constantly create contemporary maize hybrids which are superior in all production traits to hybrids created in previous breeding cycles successfully responding to current maize producers needs.
