Soybean breeding group
The main focus of MRIZP soybean breeding program:
- development of soybean cultivars of standard grain type (high-yielding and good technological quality of grain, well-adapted to wide range of agroecological conditions, resistant to lodging and seed shattering, tolerant to diseases and stress factors)
- breeding for improved nutritional value of the grain (reduced trypsin inhibitor content in the mature grain; enhanced level of antioxidants).
- production of high-quality breeder’s seed of released cultivars.
Soybean breeding procedure
Breeding procedure combines conventional methods of selection with application of biochemical and molecular markers mainly for evaluation of genetic diversity of the parental genotypes, identification of new sources of genetic variation and marker assisted selection. Among the soybean varieties released in MRIZP, the most recommended commercial cultivars are Selena and Lela (maturity group 0), Laura (maturity group I) and Lidija and Olga (maturity group II).
MRIZP soybean working collection comprises more than 600 accessions introduced from different regions of the world, maintaining valuable breeding sources of high genetic diversity.
